SeaGreen Solutions began with a simple question:
Could the ocean help solve one of our planet's biggest challenges?
When founder and CEO Marie Dankworth moved from Germany to Fredericton to pursue her PhD in seaweed research at the University of New Brunswick, she became fascinated by the incredible potential of seaweed. Unlike most land plants, seaweed requires no farmland, no freshwater, and no fertilizer to grow. It can grow by up to a foot a day, making it one of the fastest-growing organisms on Earth while capturing significant amounts of carbon dioxide through photosynthesis.
But there was a problem.
As quickly as seaweed captures carbon, it also returns much of it to the atmosphere when it naturally decomposes. During conversations with friends and colleagues about climate change, Marie began asking a simple question:
What if there was a way to keep that carbon locked away while creating something useful?
That question led her to biochar, a stable, carbon-rich material traditionally produced from plant biomass. The idea of combining seaweed with biochar opened the door to something much bigger: transforming an abundant Atlantic Canadian resource into products that could improve soil health, support agriculture, and permanently store carbon for hundreds to thousands of years.
Recognizing the opportunity to turn this research into real-world impact, Marie partnered with videographer, entrepreneur, and climate advocate Joel Thompson. Together, they founded SeaGreen Solutions in July 2025 with a shared vision of harnessing the ocean to heal the earth.
Today, SeaGreen Solutions is a Fredericton-based ocean technology company developing innovative climate solutions from Atlantic Canadian seaweed. In 2026, the company launched its first community pilot projects, including a partnership with the City of Fredericton using seaweed-derived biochar in municipal flower planters to improve soil health, retain moisture, reduce water use, and permanently store carbon. SeaGreen is also developing sustainable growing media for tree seedlings as a renewable alternative to peat.
